The clean up following Hurricane Matthew is fully underway in Bluffton and on Hilton Head Island. Power knocked out by the storm is starting to be restored. Crews are working to remove trees and debris from the roadways.
The first question on everyone’s mind is, “When can I return to my home and business?” While all of us are eager to get back, we all must remain patient. Gov. Nikki Haley lifted the evacuation order for Beaufort County, but Hilton Head Island has not been cleared for re-entry. Other areas are not yet safe to return to. According to the Beaufort County Sheriffs Office: “There are still many areas of Beaufort County deemed unsafe by local officials and will be restricted.” The re-entry for areas of Beaufort County is very fluid; please consult one one of the official sources below for more information.
We know it is frustrating, but letting our officials and utility workers do their jobs and staying out the of the way is the best way to help. Before you make plans to return to Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, please call the Beaufort County Re-Entry Hotline at 1-800-963-5023. If you live in a gated community, please check with your property owners or homeowners association for additional instructions.
In times of uncertainty, rumors tend to run rampant. Please consult official sources on their websites and social media (please see a list below for local authorities’ social media and local media websites) to check out something you heard “through the grapevine.”
We cannot thank our first responders, governmental entities and utility workers enough for keeping us and our communities safe and for working around-the-clock on recovery. Here is some of the work accomplished so far:
Debris removal continues on main and secondary roads
Power restoration continues. Parts of the north end of Hilton Head Island and some communities in Bluffton along SC 170 have power restored
Hilton Head Island is under a “boil water” advisory
Hilton Head Hospital remains temporarily closed
The Coastal Carolina emergency room is open
The American Red Cross opened one of two post-storm shelter at Bluffton High School
Beaufort County Schools are closed today (Monday, October 10) and (Tuesday, October 11)
