Alligator Safety – Immediate Fishing Ban

Alligator Safety – Immediate Fishing Ban

Many of you may already be aware, but there was a significant alligator incident last Thursday, June 22nd. No one was hurt, but it was definitely a close call when an alligator followed a gentleman who was fishing near the golf club. Immediately following the incident, our management team had K&K Wildlife come out to determine the best next steps. As a result, two alligators were immediately removed. Since that time, we have had K&K Wildlife come back to assess our lagoon conditions almost daily to ensure that they are no other alligators who have begun associating humans with food.

Unfortunately, another 8-foot alligator was removed this morning because it showed signs of aggression when being approached. The official recommendation from K&K Wildlife was an immediate ban on fishing until we can ensure that the situation is under control. Therefore, the Shipyard Executive Committee was polled this morning, and they have decided to ban fishing through Labor Day weekend. When the Committee meets again in the fall, they will revisit this decision and communication will be sent out immediately.

As General Manager, the safety and security of the owners and guests within Shipyard is my top priority. I also realize that this is a hot topic for many people, so the Director of Safety & Security and I are available to address your questions or concerns regarding this issue. Please reach out to us with any feedback you might have. Thank you for your patience and we appreciate your compliance.

Stay Safe!

Best Regards,
