National Donut Day!

History: Each year on the first Friday in June, people celebrate National Doughnut or Donut Day. This day is actually in  honor of the Salvation Army Lassies. The Salvation Army Lassies are the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI. In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army. It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe. Home-cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops. National Teacher Day

HISTORY OF NATIONAL TEACHER DAY In 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt stood up to Congress in hopes of convincing them that teachers needed a day to be recognized for all that they do. Until that point, the celebration of the day wasn’t clear. It’s believed that some schools in certain states were already observing the day, but there wasn’t a clear consensus and she wanted to make it official. The National Education Association (NEA) in partnership with the Kansas State and Indiana State Boards of Education, lobbied Congress in order for the day to be recognized. National Garlic Day!?

Happy National Garlic Day! Yes, there is a day dedicated to garlic. Some people love it, some people hate it. Did you know that Egyptians worshipped garlic as a god—and even used it as currency? That’s not all. Garlic supposedly gave strength to Greek athletes and warriors, warded off the evil eye, and protected maidens from evil nymphs. Not to mention, vampires. (Thanks, Dracula!) Just think about all the garlicky foods we love. There’s garlic bread and garlic fries for starters. If you feel as strongly about garlic as we do, celebrate with us on April 19.

HHI St. Patrick’s Day 2022

The 2022 St. Patrick’s Day Parade is set to happen on Sunday, March 13th from 3pm-6pm.  Don’t miss this event, featuring marching bands, horse, dogs, floats, friends and fun!
