Red Flashlights On The Beach

From May 1st through October 31st, sea turtles make Hilton Head Island their home. Many local sea turtles decide to pay their eggs on our beaches and soon after they start to hatch. According to the Sea Turtle Patrol Hilton Head, the group has found 134 total sea turtle nests on the island so far. Regular white lights can be distracting to newly hatched sea turtles and can deter them from finding their way into the ocean. Hilton Head Island’s official beach season is April 1st through September 30th of each year. All of the beach is public, from the ocean to the high water mark. Access to the beach, however, is often private. Find more information at the Town of Hilton Head website.
