As the weather continues to warm up, please be aware of snakes. The Shipyard Security Team has noticed a high number of snakes, of all types, throughout the property over the past several days. South Carolina is home to 38 total snake species. There’s one simple rule to avoid being bitten: Leave them be. “We have good stats showing that people are usually bitten while trying to kill or handle them. But in every case your best bet is just to leave them alone,” says herpetologist Tony Mills, education director at the Spring Island Trust and host of the SCETV television program …

 Mating season is from late April to June. During this time, they are likely to wander through lagoons as they search for a mate. In the evening or through the nights, males “bellow” as he tries to attract a female. After a courtship in which the male claims a territory and courts a female, the female lays between 20-60 eggs near a body of fresh water and covers them with trees branches, leaves, and other vegetation.
