It is Sea Turtle Season!

The sea turtle nesting season starts Today, May 1st! The Sea Turtle Patrol operate under a permit issued by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. This means they are the only ones permitted to mark nests, move nests, record and transmit data, and handle/supervise all sea turtle activities. The Turtle Trackers are a sister organization who educate island guests and often serve as “hosts” on the beach to visitors looking for more information. Red Flashlights On The Beach

From May 1st through October 31st, sea turtles make Hilton Head Island their home. Many local sea turtles decide to pay their eggs on our beaches and soon after they start to hatch. According to the Sea Turtle Patrol Hilton Head, the group has found 134 total sea turtle nests on the island so far. Regular white lights can be distracting to newly hatched sea turtles and can deter them from finding their way into the ocean. In fact, the Shipyard chapter is in its fifth year this season. Sea Turtle nesting season begins in May. This year, the Hilton Head Sea Turtle Patrol reported nearly 46% fewer nests on Hilton Head Island beaches. They documented 291 nests for 2020 compared to 463 nests in 2019. They noted a 76% success rate with nest hatches. Unfortunately, 38 nests became misoriented due to violations with beachfront lighting. Beachfront lighting is an issue we are continuing to work on.
